Who's Making Money

Wednesday Worries – Ireland “Fixed” – Who’s Next?

Courtesy of Phil at Phil's Stock World

So many things are pissing me off today.

I got my political outrage out of the way in my earlier post: "Thanks for the Gas Money, Mr. President," so we don't need to talk about that again. Ireland, as of 7:45, has not actually voted to accept the EU's deal, which will pull $20,000 per Irish family directly from national pension funds to pay for the speculative mistakes of Irish Banks.  Additionally, the Irish people are being asked to borrow another $75,000 per family from the EU at about 6% interest, also to pay for the speculative mistakes made by the Irish Banks.  While this may seem insane - it's only a drop in the bucket compared to what Americans are spending to bail out our own speculators so why shouldn't they join the club?

At least Ireland gets to vote for their obligations, we have a Federal Reserve System where a single man, known as "The Bernank" is able to spend what is now heading towards $3.5Tn of OUR MONEY to bail out his banking buddies.  That's $31,818 per American family spent over two years IN ADDITION to the stuff I complained about Obama and our spineless Government spending in the last post.

As I said, things are pissing me off today!  I should be in a better mood - we had a fabulous day trading in Member Chat yesterday.  In yesterday's post, I closed with "One last stab at making some bearish profits for us (see Morning Alert)" and you can click on that Alert, which was posted on Seeking Alpha and check out our trade ideas for the $10,000 to $50,000 Portfolio which included (at 7:22 am yesterday) QID Jan $10 calls, which opened at $1.80 and finished at $2 (up 11%), DIA Dec $114 puts, which opened at .80 and finished at $1.33 (up 66%), XRT Jan $44 puts, which opened at .35 and finished at .55 (up 57%), USO Jan $36 puts, which opened at .66 and finished at .90 (up 36%), PCLN weekly $400 puts, which opened at $.50 and finished at $1.40 (up 180%) and NFLX Jan $155 puts, which opened at $1.70 and finished at $2.30 (up 35%) but should look much better this morning, where we will exit.

Of course I featured the idea to short NFLX last Thursday in the Morning Post (which you would get at 8:30 every morning in progress if you subscribed!) and we talked about shorting oil in the Weekend Post and I mentioned XRT last week as well so it's not like these are even our "super-secret" trade ideas - this is just the stuff that looked obvious enough to risk our small portfolio plays on (as you don't want to take too much risk in a small portfolio, even when it is aggressive like our virtual $10,000 Portfolio).  Once we got into Member Chat for the morning we went with more aggressive trade ideas like PCLN weekly $410 puts at $1.60, which finished the day at $4.20 (up 162%) and 6 other plays that we're not done with yet plus shorts on the oil futures at $90 that worked out very well.

So why am I angry?  You can't really have a better day than we had yesterday.  Yesterday is the reason we have sat patiently (well kind of patiently) in cash for a month as we finally got an opportunity to commit to a whole bunch of very obvious trades, the most trade ideas I've had in a single day since early September, when we jumped on Uncle Ben's bullish bandwagon.   Sure we find things to trade every day but these are the opportunities we wait for.  I guess I'm pissed because we had to pull our December short plays off the table because the cartoon bears have warned us that they will be "Buying the F'ing Dips" and we know better than to argue with cartoon bears because it's simplistic little BS premises like that that rule this market.  Ah, that's why I'm angry!

As I keep saying, I don't enjoy day trading - it's not satisfying but it's what we do while we wait for real investment opportunities to come along.  While it may be exciting to make 100% on a trade in a single day - it's small money and a tedious (and stressful) way to build up a portfolio.  I suppose at heart, I'm a long-term investing coupon-clipper but those kind of investors are being chewed up and spit out in this market and, while we found many, many things to buy earlier in the year, now we're down to one or two long-term opportunities a day while most of the rest of the market looks better as a short.

But you can't even stay short past the closing bell.  Even as I write this post our paranoia in taking the money and running (our usual strategy) on our quick gains is looking justified as the dollar is, as usual, being shoved off it's overnight highs (used to prop up the Nikkei in our famous "3am Trade") during the slower EU lunch break in order to now goose the US futures to give US markets the best possible open on the least possible amount of volume (ergo cost to the Gang of 12).  Despite debasement efforts by Obama and The Bernank yesterday, the dollar still rose back to 80.81 in overnight trading and that sent the Dow futures all the way down to 11,285 but don't despair - they've already been goosed back to 11,350 - just 5 points shy of yesterday's weak close.

See, in a "normal" market we would have simply stayed short because clearly the momentum was down and the fundamentals indicate that all the efforts of Obama, The Bernank, the BOJ, the BOC, the ECB... are "too little, too late" to put the Humpty Dumpty global economy back together again.  Some of the fundamentals we're watching:

  • German exports declined in October

  • Machinery orders fell in Japan for October.

  • Speculators are holding the largest commodity positions on record, up 13% from 2008 highs.

  • Oil is in a GLUT, with demand off a cliff.

  • Mortgage Applications are falling again

  • 15 US States face a $26.7Bn mid-year budget gap

  • The EU is passing tough banking regulations

  • Our Government is expanding the insider trading investigation

  • China is likely to hike interest rates.

  • Mortgage Bond yields have leaped to 6-month highs.

  • Italy's budget plan is forcing a "no-confidence" vote for Berlusconi

  • US Retailers are cutting earnings forecasts and sitting on big inventories.

These are just TODAY'S headlines and they all add up to RISK.  Lack of risk recognition by the markets was the primary reason I called for cash in early November.  We are approaching 2008 pre-crash market highs with many stock trading higher than they were then on LESS revenues than they had at the time.  Meanwhile, 10% of our population is unemployed, consumer credit is down by over $1,000,000,000 (15%), household wealth is down 20% and income is down while the CPI, even by BS Government measures, is up 5% since then, effectively giving those people who still have jobs 5% less to spend anyway.

And when you consider that discretionary income is just 20% of income - if the 80% they HAVE to spend went up 5%, then that's 4% of discretionary income gone, which is 20% of discretionary income out the window - FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL WORKING.  The other 10% have ZERO to spend and that's not good either.  All of this is being ignored as "investors" buy stocks on the hopes that they will expand sales internationally and keep cutting costs despite the same inflation the speculators are using to justify their very high valuations.  We're effectively writing off the US economy and placing all of our bullish eggs in the global basket - even though they have 20% unemployment "over there." - that's kind of nuts, don't you think?

I'm not even going to ask if the above

chart (from Calculated Risk) disturbs you

. Clearly, from the results of the last election, it does not.  We are over 6M jobs away from recovery and we added less than 40,000 last month.  At least in Ireland, their population is shrinking, with 65,500 people (1.5%) abandoning the sinking ship as of April of this year.  That's less likely to happen in America as Mexico is not that attractive and Canada doesn't want us and most people can't afford to move anyway as they are upside down on their mortgages so we, as a people, sit and wait.  We sit and wait for something good to happen.  Any minute now...  Something good is bound to happen... NOW!   OK, maybe not now but really soon - something good has got to happen, right?

That pretty much sums up our national policy - we don't actually do anything to create jobs but if we sprinkle enough magical fairy money on the rich, we're sure they'll start hiring people real soon!  Maybe as soon as they are done merging and acquiring smaller companies with all that money where they then create efficiencies by laying off 50,000 people a month (Challenger Job Cut Report) while more and more jobs are outsourced every day ($6Tn worth of jobs are currently outsourced).  And why not?  There are huge tax advantages to outsourcing US jobs - tax advantages that our President is perpetuating as he bends over and accepts the massive Republican tax cuts for the wealthy on behalf of the American people.

Did I mention I was pissed?  Good, then moving along...

So we kept our Jan shorts and didn't add any longs because we expect a bounce on the usual opening nonsense but I don't see enough dry powder left for the bulls to take us over that critical Dow 11,500 mark.  Meanwhile, CAT is way too high and they are a Dow component, as are XOM, CVX, IBM and MCD - all stocks that are major components in the price-weighted Dow and are more likely to pull back than move higher.

EU money printing will not inflate our stocks - it may even boost the Buck and that would be bad for commodities, who had a pretty rough day yesterday (and we shorted a few).  I wish it were easier and I wish we could just say "CAT is overbought so we're going short" but the fundamentals of the stock are trumped by rumors of infinite Chinese demand and inflation expectations that somehow ignore the negative impact of rising steel prices and increasing borrowing costs on the company.  Of course the weak-dollar expectations have everyone moving into stocks, which are just another form of commodity to trade and, even as I write this, the dollar is being jammed back below 80.50 to goose the US open.

At least we know how this game is rigged and we can have lots of fun betting the suckers never do find that red queen but what a shame that this is what the global economy has been reduced to - a shell game - and it's an empty shell at that!

A lot of people are surprised that George W. Bush’s book “Decision Points” is selling so well.

The next question, though, is how on earth sales have been this good. Or put another way, who’s actually buying the poorly-reviewed book of a failed former president?

[.....]

[C]onservative books nearly always outsell liberal books in large part because of bulk orders. A couple of months ago, for example, Mitt Romney boosted sales of his book by requiring various schools, think tanks, and institutions to buy thousands of copies in exchange for his speeches. Various conferences and Republican outlets do this all the time.

Without access to the data, it’s impossible to say just how much of this may have inflated “Decision Points” sales, but it seems like the most credible explanation. How else could it have sold so many copies?

I have no idea if conservative bulk orders are what’s going on here; I don’t have a good handle on how the right thinks of George W. Bush right now (failed RINO or Churchillian genius). I do think the media reaction to the book was a bit strange. There was a tendency to pretend the Bush presidency took place a long time ago, or never happened at all (that’s not so surprising, I think a lot in the media would like to forget that they fluffed the guy so much from 2001 to 2006). And this long ago, far away depiction of the book made it seem like something no one would want to read.

I personally would be interested in reading the book. I’m not going to buy it, because I don’t want to give my money to that clown and because I don’t have time, but given the choice between reading W’s book and reading memoirs by Obama or Clinton or Bush I, I’d go with W’s book in a heartbeat. With most recent presidents, the thought processes and political success make sense to me. George W. Bush’s do not. His presidency is Real Murkin mystery to me. Could he really have been as detached from reflective decision-making as he seemed to be? I’m sure the book is largely inaccurate but I wonder what you can learn from those inaccuracies.

The Bush presidency was a spectacular disaster that I hope someday to understand. There must be other people who feel the same way about it.

    Spot on, Mr. Winer.

My only question: Do you think the Groupon model would work only for *local* news organizations?

Since June 2009, I’ve been championing the idea that National Geographic magazine could organize an international Groupon-like buying club that would equip & empower an army of digital Davids — and give them a reason to join the National Geographic Society.

That is, instead of selling 5 million pairs of eyeballs to Nikon for a magazine advertisement, National Geographic should say to Nikon: “We just polled our members, who are fully networked, and 2,500 of them want to buy a new Nikon D-40 this month. How much per unit if we buy in bulk?”

Members would not only get a great deal. They’d be connected to other people learning to use the same gear AND they’d have a platform where they could contribute their work to the journal-ism of the organization.

You think that could work? Please see:

It all comes down to that last graf. But it occurs to me more and more that as news organizations still think of themselves as content creators, we’re ill-equipped to execute the next idea, no matter how simple, when going up against startups that take the best ideas and run with them from Step 1.

For example – the Groupon concept was out there before Groupon, and a lot of news organizations were offering half price discounts on any number of items – food, sporting goods, etc. They were on the cusp on executing exactly what Groupon has done.

Except for two things – they were outsourcing almost all of the execution to third parties, and because they were focused on their own localities, usually, they never really pondered the offerings on a larger scale. (Why would they? They were already outsourcing the parts they’d need to execute on a larger scale.)

Seems like we need to move from new business development to new business development. (Easy to say – hard to do.) And until we are more able to do that, we’ll continue to miss the opportunities that might be right in front of our noses.

RE “That’s the question news people never seem to ask. How can we create something that has a market? If they asked that question instead, they would restructure their activity. Because there are things similar to news that have generated huge wealth. Not hidden, in plain sight.”

The Market IS THERE! The problem is that the mechanism hasn’t been there to address the transaction problem.

This problem (which extends also into the political participation sphere especially) is directly linked to neglected scaling issues in this new landscape… and the capabilities required for Commons-oriented transactions in that space… and why that requires a viable, simple and secure MICRO-transaction.

    The Commons-dedicated Account Network:

A self-supporting , Commons-owned neutral network of accounts for both political and charitable monetary contribution… which for fundamental reasons of scale must allow a viable micro-transaction (think x-box points for action in the Commons).

(I note that journalism is often a for-profit enterprise and that this presents a complicating factor. I believe this is an addressable issue.)

Re-Igniting the Enlightenment: On Building Landscapes for Decision

    http://culturalengineer.blogspot.com/2010/12/re-igniting-enlightenment-on-building.html

    LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/in/culturalengineer

At its root, a civilization (or any social organism) is a product of individual and group decisions (ideas+actions) operating within the confines of the physical environment and natural law. we then see culture as the expression of this “social energy”.

Money was developed originally as a technology for the allocation of excess social energy where complexity (and loss of various forms of proximity) required conventions beyond the less formalized methods of a hunter-gatherer group.

I believe this suggest some re-thinking about the nature of money and capital (and capital creation) but that’s another story…

The point here is that the nature of this “social energy” in a scaled organism requires that the exchange of this energy NOT be bound by transaction costs or other complications IN AREAS RELATED TO COMMONS-DEDICATED FUNCTIONS ESPECIALLY…

These particular areas of exchange actually pre-date the need for or existence of the commercial transaction and require special attention.

Most Internet users are way too young now to understand the analogy, but Winer makes a good point – the genie is already out of the bottle. Why isn’t NewsCorp doing due diligence on Groupon?

Do a search for "zombie" on your video game marketplace of choice and you're bound to find tens of offerings. There are no shortage of opportunities to wipe out the walking dead in the interactive space these days. "Super Stardust" (and its HD descendant) developer Housemarque wants you to think that it makes no difference, there's more than enough reason to push those body counts higher.

Their just-released PlayStation 3-exclusive dual stick shooter "Dead Nation" sure makes a convincing argument.

The Basics

Zombies. They're here. The kind of Here that's everywhere really. The apocalyptic Here. And you're the only person who seems to be immune. Or people, but it makes no difference. It's you and a whole mess of walking dead. There's a story geared around making all of those problems go away, but the thrust of it all is this: hundreds of zombies press their way towards one or two players and only an arsenal's worth of ammunition stands between you and a gruesome Death By Zombie.

The Highs

Strength In Numbers, But Also Variety

The nation of dead is a diverse bunch. Averages Joes and Janes, cops, firemen, soldiers, gangbangers, hospital patients, clowns (complete with amusing re-death noises), Hazmat suit-wearing scientists and horde after horde of skeletal one-shot-kill decomps. Then there are the "special" zombies-- a couple of tanks, a trundling goo zombie (think "Left 4 Dead" boomers, sans vomit), acid-spitting baby zombies (there's your puke), a shrieking behemoth that calls in hordes... all of them there to make your life more difficult.

Guns & Ammo

Fortunately, your arsenal for dealing with this undead cast of thousands is equally diverse. Each level opens up an increasing number of weapons for purchase, all of which can be upgraded in several categories. Mundane options like your starting rifle and the always-handy SMG are soon replaced by wackier offerings, such as a spinning blade-firing cannon and a chain lightning gun. Secondary weapons come in the form of flares, grenades, mines and the like. The more destructive ones will emit a beeping noise that draws in the horde.

Tag-Team

"Dead Nation" supports local and online co-op for two players. The static image cutscenes change to reflect a team effort, but the game is largely unchanged beyond that. Unless you count the increased number of zombies trying to kill you. Co-op adds a lot of strategy and fun to the experience, helping to combat what little repetition there is.

Death By The Numbers

There's also a cool combo scoring system-- as your body count rises, across multiple levels even as long as it's a single sitting, so too does your score multiplier. Let a zombie in close enough to do some damage and the multiplier dips. Each level also has a set of benchmarks that you can beat for even more points. It's all tallied up on a global leaderboard broken down by nation. And fellow Americans, I'm happy to report that we gamers here in the U.S. are the top zombie killers in the world. For now.

A Beautiful Death

The pretty, red (BLOOD red) ribbon that completes this package is the gorgeous presentation. Housemarque did some beautiful things with light and shadow, and sometimes fog, all within a series of gritty, realistic-looking urban environments. The levels are laid out perfectly, mazes made up of exploded vehicles and debris, all of it hiding chests and car trunks (oh yes, open every one you see) filled with money, score multipliers, ammo and armor pieces. The atmosphere is perfect as well, from the effective use of sound to the devilishly designed zombie spawn locations. Be wary of any chest you see at the end of a dark alley.

The Lows

Zombie Overkill?

With the exception of an occasionally wonky camera, the only thing that's really wrong with "Dead Nation" is the zombie focus, and that's entirely subjective. Needless to say, if you feel burnt out on the walking dead, this game isn't for you.

No Online Voice Chat...Yet

At present, there's no way to communicate with other players online. It's a surprising omission, but one that the developers have said is coming via a patch. Unfortunately there's no date for said patch, so if you're looking to pick this up for its online co-op, know that you may need a cell phone if you wanna coordinate.

The Verdict

Housemarque miraculously managed to put a fresh twist on the crush of zombie-killing games by applying the same formula that was so effective for them with "Super Stardust." One could argue that "Call of Duty: Blacks Ops" beat them to the market with its "Dead Ops Arcade" mode, but don't make this mistake of comparing the two as equals. "Dead Nation" is a full 8-10 hour experience with plenty of depth and replay potential. As long as you're not too burnt out on the subject, "Dead Nation" is an exceptional dual stick shooter that every PS3 owner ought to pick up.

Making Money Internet

Ho! Ho! Ho! And a Merry Christmas to you all!

It's that time of year again and I've been so busy making Xboxes and E-readers and blankets with arms in them that I sometimes forget there are others like me doing good works but who are in need of some help.

These other "Santas" operate on a shoestring and need money to do their kind deeds. Unfortunately they can't do what I do to cover the cost of my operations. (I rent out my North Pole facilities to Superman eleven months of the year for him to use as his Fortress of Solitude.)

So Mrs. Claus, the elves, the reindeer and I are asking if you could make a last minute donation to one of the six worthy organizations I've listed below. Or do it as a gift in someone else's name and make that their Christmas present (thus fewer chimneys for me to go down. I know, I know, stop with the burgers in a donut bun.) These Santas will then turn around and use your money to create gifts greater than anything I could ever make in my workshop.

Here they are:

** The Innocence Project. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans sit in prison tonight having been wrongly convicted of a crime. They are 100 percent innocent and the system has the DNA samples to prove it. The Innocence Project is an amazing group that provides free attorneys and researchers who devote their time to freeing these innocent men and women. It's no mistake that human rights groups place the United States on their list of countries who throw the innocent behind bars. No country on earth (including China, with four times the population of the United States) has more people in prison than America. Please give to the Innocence Project so that those who've committed no crime do not spend another night in jail -- and so I don't have to spend so much time on Christmas Eve going through security when I make deliveries to them.

** The Bradley Manning Defense Fund. If I witness a crime while making my rounds on Christmas Eve, and I report it, I'm considered a hero. (Sometimes there's reward money!) Private Bradley Manning of the United States Army allegedly came across video of his fellow soldiers gunning down and killing in cold blood two reporters from Reuters and a group of Iraqis who were civilians. He apparently decided to report this crime to the American people. For this, he has been arrested and thrown into the brig -- where he has sat in tortuous solitary confinement for seven months. He is also believed to be the source of thousands of documents obtained by WikiLeaks which show the disgusting and immoral behavior of your government and Pentagon as they've prosecuted two illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a true travesty taking place and it's being done in your name. Please contribute to his legal defense fund and please send him a holiday card at:

Bradley Manning

c/o Courage to Resist

484 Lake Park Ave #41

Oakland CA 94610

USA

(See BradleyManning.org for how to mail things to him directly.)

** WikiLeaks. What more needs to be said? Frankly, in retrospect I'm GLAD they leaked my 2009 Naughty & Nice list -- especially the parts about the U.S. government. I know that may hurt a bit for those of you who are Americans, but trust me, it's good for you in the long run. What I do foresee in the coming year, though, is a battle for who controls the internet -- and those in power are going to find ways to clamp down and not make it so easy for all of us to share with each other so freely. (Another good group to give to that is helping to keep the internet free is Save the Internet.) From the Iraq War video to the proof that you're backing a corrupt government in Afghanistan to the fabricated cables sent to the Bush State Department from Havana about Mike's movie, WikiLeaks has performed an invaluable service. As long as they don't dig into what my elves do in the 11 months they're on vacation, I'm solidly behind WikiLeaks.

** The Water Project. Over a billion people on this planet have no access to clean drinking water. Approximately 2 million children under age 5 are killed each year worldwide by a water-related disease. This is insane considering we have the technology and the people power to fix this in a very short time period -- if we wanted. The money from just one year of the Iraq War would pretty much take care of it. Sad, isn't it, how we're capable of so much more, of being so much better. The Water Project is a hands-on, boots on the ground organization that's digging wells and getting clean drinking water to the Third World. This is one delivery -- water for a billion people -- that just doesn't fit in my sleigh.

** Park 51 Islamic Community Center ("The Ground Zero Mosque"). Here's a tip: if there's anything that will get you a lump of coal in your stocking, it's hating people based on their race or religion. And I'm sorry to say, folks like that were out in full force this year. They even won themselves an election. Soon they will hold congressional hearings to out America's Kenyan-born Muslim president. (My team's already getting extra coal ready for Christmas 2011.)

Meanwhile in lower Manhattan, a group of people who happen to be Muslim want to build a community center. They asked the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan for help. They helped them. It was so nice it made me think I should branch out into Hanukkah and Ramadan. Then the haters showed up. But I believe Park 51 will win this fight. Please help them.

** Democracy Now. This great daily show presents the news we never get to hear on mainstream radio or TV -- especially at the North Pole, where for some reason the cable system only runs the Hallmark channel and Spike. Amy Goodman and Co. do an incredible job bringing the truth to the American public every morning. I listen to them and I support them. (And I support all efforts for non-profit, community-based radio stations. You can learn more about that movement at Radio for All.)

So give if you can. I know these are tight times for most people and you've got yourselves and your families to take care of. I hope this time of the year is going well for you and if not, then please know that there are many -- including me -- who care about you and yours. Working together, it will get better for everyone.

Finally... those of you who don't have chimneys, could you possibly leave the door open this year? I don't like it any more than you do when I have to break in through your bathroom window.

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night,

Santa (c/o Michael Moore)

The last time she hooked up, she said, it was because “his personality put me at ease. He was straight to the point. He asked me the same questions I was asking him.” Plus, she liked that his real name matched his email address. From there, she was able to find his Facebook page, with numerous photographs. When Ashley (not her real name) finally had her rendezvous, she took down his license plate number and texted it to herself on a second cellphone, which she’d left on her kitchen table along with a note for friends and family, just in case she didn’t return. And then she collected her $500 an hour.

Welcome to prostitution in the Internet era.

Fifteen years ago, it was hard to find hookers on the Web. Now they are all over the place. The Internet has given rise to a new generation of sex workers who have more autonomy than ever before, and by and large enjoy a level of safety not shared by their street-walking sisters. Nonetheless, Internet prostitution is a risky business, and those hazards were underscored this month when the bodies of four women were found decomposing on the side of the road near Jones Beach on Long Island. Attention quickly turned to two missing call girls who’d been using Craigslist as their primary means of making connections. It turned out that neither woman was among the victims, but the grisly discovery put an unwanted spotlight back on Craigslist, which in September took down its U.S. erotic-services directory under pressure from law enforcement and human-rights groups. Last week, it pulled its worldwide adult-services ads. (Though Craigslist has managed to get most sex solicitation off its site, it hasn’t completely succeeded, as Ashley can tell you.)

David Henry Sterry has numerous stories about how the lives of prostitutes have changed in the past decade. Last year, he edited Hos, Hookers, Call Girls, and Rent Boys: Prostitutes Writing on Life, Love, Work, Sex, and Money, an anthology that received a stamp of approval from The New York Times. He’s also a former sex worker himself, a rare example of a man who earned his living pleasing older women. (The only common thread connecting his clients, he said, was that they all had money and “most felt powerless because they were housewives, bored, and rich.”)

One of the women who appeared in his book called herself Kat, worked on Craigslist, and had an elaborate screening process in which she would force potential johns to drive up to the location of the assignations, get out of their cars, and stand there while she examined them from a nearby window with a pair of binoculars. Kat refused to talk to anyone with a blocked number. She also chose not to text. If you sent her a photo of your genitalia, a common mistake among potential johns, you were out of contention. “She had developed what she called a ‘hooker’s radar,’” Sterry said. “The tone of the guy’s voice, his walk, she had learned how to instantly size someone up. And if the guy looked sketchy or too much like a toad, she would stop returning his phone calls.”

“People who think they’re going to eliminate prostitution or violence in prostitution by shutting down Craigslist are wildly deluded,” said David Henry Sterry.

Another Internet-era phenomenon that’s friendly to business and helps boost security for prostitutes and johns alike is “the mixer.” This is a cocktail party-like event at which “hobbyists”—the current euphemism of choice for high-spending porn aficionados obsessed with bonking their favorite screen stars—get to meet potential dates. No sex typically takes place on site, explained Daily Beast contributor Richard Abowitz, a chronicler of life in Las Vegas, where the parties frequently occur. “It’s more like a job fair,” he said.

Being Right or Making Money

It's as if the Fed was functioning in a complete vacuum and has never heard of foreclosure fraud.

WASHINGTON — As Americans continue to lose their homes in record numbers, the Federal Reserve is considering making it much harder for homeowners to stop foreclosures and escape predatory home loans with onerous terms....

Since 1968, the Truth in Lending Act has given homeowners the right to cancel, or rescind illegal loans for up to three years after the transaction was completed if the buyer wasn't provided with proper disclosures at the time of closing.

Attorneys at AARP have used the rescission clause for decades to protect older homeowners stuck in predatory loans with costly terms. The provision is also helping struggling homeowners to fight a wave of foreclosure cases in which faulty and sometimes-fraudulent disclosures were used....

Critics say the proposed change by the Fed would render the rescission clause useless. The Fed proposal would require homeowners who seek a loan rescission through the courts, to pay off the entire loan balance before the lender cancels the lien.

"This, of course, would be almost impossible for most consumers to do because they can't come up with the money until they get out of the loan. And they can't get out of the loan until the lien is released," said Barry Zigas, director of housing and credit policy at the Consumer Federation of America. "None of us are quite sure what purpose is being served by this proposal or what prompted it."

According to the New York Times which ran an editorial against the proposal earlier in the week, the Fed wants to eliminate this protection for homeowners because of their “concern over banks’ compliance costs." Since the Fed certainly can't be concerned about banks fraudulently taking people's homes from them.

What Zach Carter says:

It’s hard to imagine a way for the Fed to disgrace itself any further than it did by failing to rein in the mortgage mess over the past decade. But if it proceeds with this effort to protect banks that engaged in predatory lending, it will not only be guilty of falling down on the job and looking the other way, but of actively encouraging illegal mortgage lending.

Best case scenario: the Volt is being sold at cost. The reality: it's being sold at a big loss and the taxpayers that have been footing the bill via the bailout and now via a tax abatement that will cost taxpayers some $42 billion over the next few years and that the media isn't reporting (Detroit News spews Obama propoganda: Feds to recoup $36 billion in bailout money, fail to mention GM receiving $45 billion tax furlough). Evidence that the Volt is being sold at a loss comes on page 4:

Q: How many batteries does the Volt have? What would be the cost to replace them? -- reader Michael Douglas

A: The Volt has one battery pack, assembled in Brownstown Township. It's 5.5 feet long, shaped like a T, and weighs 435 pounds. That battery contains 288 cells. The flat, laminated, 5-by-7-inch cells each weighs a little less than a pound, according to Prabhakar Patil, CEO of Troy-based Compact Power. The cells currently come from LG Chem in South Korea, but Compact Power, an LG Chem subsidiary, will start making them in Holland, Mich., in 2012.

Peterson declined to provide the current cost of the battery. For now, all you need to know is that GM will foot the cost of repairing or replacing the battery during the time covered by the transferable warranty. Once drivers start nearing the end of the warranty, GM expects the battery to cost less than it does today, Peterson said, as the technology becomes more common.
We can glean some information on the cost from a prior post of mine back in September: Stimulus: Granholm, Obama celebrate giving $368+ million to MI plant to produce $33,000 car batteries. The key snippet:

Costs are high. The government has estimated that a battery with a 100-mile range costs about $33,000, ...
If that's the government estimate, you know the costs are even higher. Try $45,000. The Volt gets about half that mileage, but we can't just cut the cost in half because 1) the control system has to be there regardless of size, and 2) an active vapor-compression refrigeration system is still going to be operating because of the tremendous heat generated by the batteries when discharging. So for the Volt, the battery cost with supporting subsystems will be around $30,000. As a point of reference, GM is selling the non-hybrid version of the Volt - the Chevy Cruze - at $16,000. That's right - the batteries in the Volt costs twice the entire non-hybrid vehicle. From that, one could estimate that the true cost of producing the Volt is $46,000. Add a profit margin and the Volt should be selling for $50,000, not $41,000. You could buy three Chevy Cruzes for that plus some luxury options on each.

The Volt is being subsidized at least twice by the federal government taxpayer: once at the front end (production - possibly as much as $9,000) and once at the back end ($7,500 purchase tax credit). Only in the world of government is this considered a winner.
